We had an adorable styled shoot planned for our new pricing for 2022.
I wanted it to be super colorful, fun and light.
I needed cute models and when I saw Kasey’s cute man at her sister’s wedding I knew they’d be the perfect couple to ask to join.
Kasey & Chris agreed, so we started planning the typical: you wear this, he’ll need to wear this, your hair will need to look like this, nails like this. . .and so forth and so on.
So a few weeks later when I got a text from her mom saying we need to talk, I figured maybe they’d split and we’d need NEW MODELS. . .
“so it just so happens Chris’ family will be in town for his dad’s birthday. His sisters are kind of spread out all over the US but will be here and he was REALLY HOPING TO PROPOSE. . . DO YOU THINK THERE IS ANYWAY WE COULD MAKE IT HAPPEN AT THE SHOOT?!? IF NOT, NO BIG DEAL”
& since I am a SUCKER for romance, and fairy tales and a good party I 100% agreed (as I usually do) without first thinking through how hard it would be to pull off not only a stellar styled shoot, which we actually needed, but also help Chris pull off his ideal proposal. . . all without letting Kasey know what was going on.
The day came and everything was set.
The weather was perfect.
Everyone, including Kasey’s best friends and Chris’s sisters had been flown in and were hiding out in the back hay barn while we did what she thought was a cute engagement styled shoot for the website. The entire time I was giving Chris shit. Like, “I mean, it would have been great if she had a real ring by now for this session, vs this fake one”
Kasey’s mom had already told me she’d confessed to her that she hoped I WOULDN’T give him a hard time the day of the session, because what if he WAS PLANNING TO PROPOSE AT SOME POINT and now this shoot was going to be huge, and maybe his engagement wasn’t going to be elaborate and she didn’t want him to feel bad, or sad that it wouldn’t measure up. . .
((because that’s how good of a human she is))
+++ if you’d ever met Chris, you’d know BIG AND FANCY and flamboyant isn’t really his style, so it actually worked perfectly because she’d have NO IDEA what was actually happening and we all couldn’t wait to see it play out.
It was awkward right after we finished the bulk of photos and I had to come up with an excuse to take the faux diamond off her finger.
” I need this because the next little part we don’t want it to actually look like y’all are engaged for the shoot”
and she was all “cool”
and took it off,
having no idea she’d be replacing it with an incredible ring from JEWELER’S TRADE
that he had custom designed for her, along side his mom and her mom weeks prior ((thanks SARAH!)))
I kind of left her stranded at the gate, because at this point I hadn’t scripted much else, and had left it all up to Chris.
He’d wrote her a simple note, and I told her once she finished reading it just to make her way over to the next site.
We all watched (their family and friends still hidden in the hay barn) as she started walking towards him.
At this point, she was in this weird place where she wasn’t sure if this was still a shoot, or a real engagement.
She told me later that night she didn’t want to cry, because how embarrassed she’d have been if she thought OMG HE IS PROPOSING TO ME only to find out it was in fact just part II of the shoot and he had ZERO intentions of proposing.
Her face as she walked to him was kind of like when you get that amazing present at christmas that says you’re going to Europe but you don’t want to get too excited because what if it’s simply a book about touring Europe that is only to sit on your coffee table and actually doesn’t include a vacation and you don’t want to seem ungrateful but you also hope that it’s more. . .
yeah, it was like that.
So as soon as he grabbed her hands and reached for something in his pocket, she knew none of us could fake that.
nor would we.
WE ARE NOT ACTUAL MONSTERS YOU GUYS.
Every single one of us vendors had tears streaming at this point, as she let herself come into the reality that this WAS IN FACT FOR HER. HE WAS REALLY PROPOSING.
THIS PART WASN’T STYLED FOR PRETEND. IT WAS ALLLLL FOR REAL.
But the tears didn’t kick off for her, until she realized those they loved most were now flooding out of the barn towards them to celebrate.
He’d done it.
We’d done it ! ! !
We’d captured a few images for the website ((but no where what we thought we’d get because tbh we were all so worried about blowing the surprise that we could hardly even speak to her and direct her)) but we’d also helped Chris pull off the ULTIMATE SURPRISE for Kasey, an engagement like something out of a fairytale.
She sobbed throughout the evening and I can’t imagine how relieved she was to know the excitement that she tried to not allow herself to feel as she made that walk to him, incase this was part of some orchestrated photoshoot for a website, was in fact all for her. . . .
&& to know that even though Chris might not love the spotlight, it was worth it for him to have every single moment of this particular night out back, captured to remember forever.
I have to give a major shoutout to all the vendors, who came and took care of everything, that made the vision we all had for the evening come to fruition!

to my lover, #dearjason for coming out straight after work and spraying for all the mosquitoes and ticks and ants that could ruined the night, but instead were no worse than just chilling on your own back patio. . . also for wrangling all of our kids to bed without me while I gorged fried chicken at the table with the girls after the shoot and talked about how perfect everything was.
